Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and Community Periodontal Index in a sample of Korea adults. In 2010, 3,309 subjects, 25-45 years of age, who participated in the KNHANES (a cross-sectional survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) were selected for analysis. They were divided into 4 groups: underweight 147 (BMI<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight 2,194 (18.5¡ÂBMI<25.0 kg/m2), overweight 845 (25.0¡ÂBMI<30.0 kg/m2) and obesity 123 (BMI¡Ã30.0 kg/m2). Periodontal status was assessed by Community Periodontal Index and periodontitis was defined as ¡Ã code 3. Increase BMI had significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis compared to those having underweight after adjusting for confounding variables; the odds ratios were normal weight (OR=1.27), overweight (OR=1.47) and obesity (OR=1.77) respectively. The result of this study suggests that it is possible to use the information as basic data for educational and periodontal intervention programs based on the BMI.
